How to Report New York Unemployment Fraud

If you want to know how to report unemployment fraud, you must first be sure that someone is committing unemployment fraud. In the state of New York it is a crime to knowingly collect unemployment benefits that you are not eligible to receive, and this is considered unemployment fraud. BUT, it is very important to note that IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO WORK WHILE YOU ARE COLLECTING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS.

You may be able to work at a job and make a certain amount of money while still collecting unemployment benefits. When you apply for unemployment, this amount will be determined, and how this works will be explained to you by your unemployment counselor.

If you do work while you are collecting unemployment benefits, it is VERY important that you follow the rules given to you by your unemployment counselor, which includes reporting where you work, how much you make every week, etc.

If you suspect someone of committing unemployment fraud, you can contact the unemployment office to report them. You may be able to remain anonymous, or you may have to give your name and contact information to report them.

When you make your report, be sure to give as much detailed information as possible, including the following:

  • Their name
  • Their address
  • Their phone number
  • Where they are working
  • How much money they're making

If you know that someone is committing unemployment fraud, you can report them by contacting your local unemployment office.

I know someone working off the books making $400.00 plus commission and still collecting unemployment every week, as a matter of fact with all the money she is making she just leased a brand new car, I find it unfair that we who have jobs bust our butts and these people get off scott free, well I know karma will come back to me hard but I am sick of watching people take advantage while all the others are hard working.....

I know someone who has been claiming unemployment for a couple of years. They OWN their own COMPANY and is still making money under the table, and also has leased a brand new car by making fake pay stubs and fake tax returns. It is unfair to people who actually need unemployment, rather than money hungry people whom take advantage of the system. How can I report them?

Hi! I'm a freelancer writer. If I write three pieces in one day, do I need to count that as three days worked or one?

Thank you,

i received benefits for 6 month looked for job, received extension after 6 months , claimed benefits for a week, and found a part time job where i worked for 3 days for next 2 weeks but my weekly pay was more than 500$. now heres a part i didnt get untill now, i thought that u can claim benefits if u worked less than 4 days OR made less then 405$. so i claimed benefits for the 2 weeks untill the job became full time a d i stopped claiming up untill june where it became part time again for a week but still managed to make more than 405$ so i filed a claim again. heres the big part. department sent me a letter asking whos my current employer and why was there a pause in my claims. i ignored it and instead i called them , the lady was relly strick about her questions asking mewhy i claimed this and that, then i told her i allowed my gf fill it out for me and she obviously made a mistake, then it became a problem i shared my account to someone well watever. i asked her to cancell the claim because i thought i was going to get laid of since i only worked 3 days, but i stayed at the current job. she then explained me if i make more than 405 it doesnt mateer how many days i worked . so i went back to march and saw the 2 weeks i received $$ . i called again department the next day to explain them that i made a mistake on these 2 weeks and i d like to give the money back even tho it was only 200$ for 2 weeks ,100$ each. i didnt think it was searious at first but now im reading about it and it seems like i should have read the booklet. how severe you guys find this case. they took my statements and told me theyll call me back about the issue. it was done unwillingly. do you guys think i can work it out with them? thanks for any replys.
