Minnesota Unemployment Fraud Penalties

REMEMBER:

IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO WORK WHILE YOU ARE COLLECTING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS.

You are able to work at a job and make a certain amount of money while still collecting unemployment benefits. When you apply for unemployment, this amount will be determined, and how this works will be explained to you by your unemployment counselor.

ALSO REMEMBER:

IT IS A CRIME TO COLLECT UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS WHEN YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THEM

If you willingly collect unemployment benefits when you are not eligible for them, and when you don't meet all the requirements - this is considered unemployment fraud and there are stiff penalties for committing unemployment fraud.

Unemployment Fraud Penalties include some or all of the following:

1. Fine. You may have to pay back the unemployment money you collected (this is called restitution) and pay a large criminal fine.
2. Jail. You may be sent to jail if you are found guilty and convicted of unemployment fraud.
3. Probation.

I know someone that works a few months per year and collects benefits the rest of the year. She does this every year for years now,she takes out of state trips while collecting, call s in her claim, blocking the number so they do not see she is out of state, laughs about it and does it all the time.I have never collected benefits,i tried once when harassed to the point that i had to quit a job,and was denied. This is really screwed up, having a legitiment claim and being denied while another person regularly commits fraud and keeps getting paid. What penalty and fines are they entitled to recieve and how do i go about reporting them?I have proof this person was out of state three weeks while collecting benefits and will be happy to submit,as long as someone will actually do something about it.

How do you report unemployment fraud? I know someone that didn't provide all of the necessary financial information and probably doesn't qualify for UI.

Do you have any statistics on unemployment fraud? I am doing research on this subject and would like some solid numbers to back an argument.

My boyfriend got a letter about committing unemployment fraud (works construction during summer) but the job he works during the winter does not pay him until spring time in a lump sum of his wages. So he is not being paid weekly. He has also been working like this for years and has never gotten into trouble for it. What can he do? Is this really fraud?
