Florida Unemployment Requirements

In order to start your unemployment, FL unemployment requirements include the following:

1. You are totally unemployed. Depending on your vocation and industry, you may qualify for unemployment if you have had your hours reduced.
2. You have worked and earned a minimum amount of wages in work covered by unemployment tax during the past 18 months.
3. You have lost your job through no fault of your own. If you were laid-off you will qualify for unemployment. In most cases, if you were fired for cause - you will not be eligible to collect unemployment. If you were fired for cause, you SHOULD apply for unemployment anyway, just in case you are eligible to get it.
4. You are able and available for work. If you are unable to work because of disability or medical condition, you may not meet the Florida unemployment requirements, but you should apply anyway. If you are not eligible for unemployment, you may be eligible to collect disability benefits, and the case worker at the unemployment office will be able to direct you on how to apply for disability.
5. You are registered for work at your local Workforce Development Center. You must do this when you apply for unemployment, and every week when you certify your weekly claim.
6. You are actively seeking work. You must apply to a minimum of two jobs per week.

To continue receiving weekly unemployment benefits, FL unemployment requirements state that you must file a 'weekly claim' by doing the following:

1. Meet all of the FL unemployment requirements listed above.
2. Apply for at least two jobs each week.
3. Contact the Florida unemployment office to file your 'weekly claim'. You can do this via phone or on the internet.

I am currently employed; however, on a leave of absence due to workplace bullying. I reported the incident and was told to go back to work with the offender or go on a leave of absence while persuing another position. If another position is not granted within 30 days I will be voluntarily terminated. I have applied for positions as soon as they become available on the company site. If I am not given a new position would I be eligible for unemployment? I have been with this employer for 8 years and have an impecable file. Thank you for your assistance.

I quit my job due to not being able to physically do it anymore in Massachusetts. I moved to Florida to stay with my mother so my son and I wouldn't be homeless. Do I have qualifications to file for unemployment?

This site is not up-to-date. Currently (as of some law passed in mid-2011) you must apply for at least 5 jobs each week in order to get your unemployment benefits. You also must enter the company name & address info of each of the 5 companies into their online unemployment cliam process (that's 10 jobs every two weeks). So be sure you write down everything about where you apply or you'll waste a lot of time going back to figure it out.

You also must cliam your weeks online. There's no phone or paper system anymore.
Good Luck!

I currently work L3 in Afghanistan as a military contractor. I want to get out of working in Afghanistan, but there aren't any jobs to which I can transfer in the States. Will I be eligible for unemployment if I quit my curent job to search for employment in the States?

I owned my own company with 16 employees and had to close down after 15 years and now I am trying to restart a new small S corp business at home. I just received the first check for $2,000.00 from my first sale of which $1,200.00 was borrowed from our emergency savings account and the rest has to go into buying more inventory to continue gong forward. Can I continue my unemployment until I can make enough money to pay myself a salary and after 55 years of paying taxes and unemployment I need all the help I can get to stay in my home.?

If I am entering a full time college program am I still eligible for unemployment and do not have to apply for the five jobs a week? Or does being a full time student exempt you from applying for jobs?

I held my job with the company for 4+ years & rarely took a day off ( with the exception of 1 day a week - my husband worked every tuesday & since we are already scheduled off 3 days a week I asked that tuesday be one of those days each week) .
I am pregnant with my second child & my husband & I are trying to make ends meet & he was given the oportunity to work 2 more days one week & with only one car & no babysitter for our 15 month old & being that my husband makes substantually more money than me ( on a per day basis) I was forced to take those 2 days off , when I called to notify my boss I also told her that I would keep in touch about my schedule for the following week, when I called her 2 days later she told me she was under the impression that I wouldn't be returning to work so when I said that was not the case & that I would like to return ( but instead of every tuesdays off I would need tuesdays & thursdays off - due to my husband being offered more days of work per week) she said that I would be expected to take a pay cut to be able to return " due to my limited schedule" even though I would not have any additional days off, only the 2 of the 3 we are already given would be on spacific days. I protested to the pay cut & was told they had already changed the locks then was told I could come back but that I felt that it would be awkard because they had already changed the locks & made the other employees "aware" of the situation & tried to cut my pay & also felt indirectly bullied so I declined to come back. Am I entitled to benefits?

I have been out of work since August 2009. I was pregnant, due in October 2009. I had to move out of state 7 weeks after my pregnancy to live with my parents. I found a temp position but it only lasted a few weeks and they dissolved the job. I have now gone back to Florida and have no income other than a small amount of child support. I am actively interviewing for jobs but am finding it very difficult . Would I be eligible for unemployment since I have not worked in a long time now? thanks.

No. You were fired for cause. Since your on acions led to your trmination, you are ineligible. If you were in a dug treatment program, getting help for addiction before the date of termination, apply anyway, and you may be able to get some help from disability.

It is my understanding that you need an 18 month work history within Florida. But, apply anyway, and see what happens. If your claim is denied, file anyway, and see what happens.

I was working full time as a office manager from May 2012 thru the end of August 2012 and then the owner decided to install a relative as the manager. He calls me and tells me that starting the next week I am no longer the manager and will be 100% on commission. Can I claim unemployemnt benefits as I am making less than the unemployment benefits each month, and I I claim retroactively from September 2012??
