Collecting Unemployment Benefits Every Week

Weekly Unemployment Income

How to Collect Your Jobless Benefits

Each state has a certain set of procedures and requirements to which you must adhere when you file for unemployment insurance. After you’ve filed your initial claim you need to find out:

  • How will you get your unemployment funds?
  • How do you request payments?

Receiving Your Unemployment Pay

Most states encourage you to file a new unemployment claim with an online claims application or through a telephone claims line. However, there are a few states that may require you to file in person.

**During periods of high unemployment expect phone lines to have lengthy wait queues and the processing of online applications to take a bit longer.

Gone are the days of paper checks. States typically pay their unemployment benefits one of two ways:

Direct deposit – Your weekly or bi-monthly benefits payments are deposited directly into your personal savings or checking account.

Special debit cards – Many states deposit your requested benefits payments to an account attached to a special debit card which you activate similarly to any new debit or credit card. For example, in Colorado unemployment recipients receive the Visa CAP (Colorado Automated Payment) card issued through Chase Bank. If your state uses a similar payment tool then once you file for unemployment and your claim has been approved you’ll receive your debit card and instructions for accessing your unemployment funds at ATMs or by other means.

Requesting Your Unemployment Income Payments

Just because you file for unemployment compensation and are approved to receive payments does not mean you automatically get money—you must take steps to officially request your payment benefits.

Here’s how it typically works: Once weekly or once every two weeks you will be required to request your benefits payment. You could be required to request unemployment income via phone or via online request form. Each time you request payment you must be approved before any money is deposited to bank or debit card. Be expected to answer a series of questions regarding your unemployment status for the pay period for which you’re requesting payment. Questions could include:

  • Have you been available for work?
  • Have you worked any hours?
  • Have you earned any extra money for the week/weeks you’re requesting payment?
  • Have you returned to full-time work?

Remember, your unemployment benefits are your right, but you must be conscientious about filing and requesting on-time and according to your state’s unemployment insurance procedures.

I filed a claim and they are saying I did not look for work enough? I gave them a 4 week history where I applied at 2 places a week? Is there a minimum I did not know about that is required?

I have been working in a hostile environment for a while now. I get blamed for things that are not my fault or out of my control. I am the type of person to take blame for my mistakes! Employess have been spreading that I am the cause of us not being able to cash our weekly friday paychecks until monday, that our insurance being cancelled is my fault because I did not collect enough money. It is not my fault if some people tell me that they are sending payments then they dont. Our insurance has been canceled since the 1st of oct but here we are nov 16th and they are stating that they just foudn this out last week?! there is no way, yet they deducted the money last week for health insruance that me and my son do not have apparently. told us that payroll was called in before they knew. which has to be a lie.how do you find out over a month later that they cancelled us? The insurance check bounced 2ce. It is not my fault they are writting checks when the funds are not there. This job is affecting my mental and physical health. If I take a day off because I or my child is sick I get an attitude. I can't live like this it is affecting my life at home. Also last week someone had their dirtbike in our warehouse and it leaked gas causing the whole please to reak, they had the doors open and fans on! there is no proper ventillation. It wasnt until I complained about the smell a few times that they put an airscrubber in the office. But we were breathing that in for about 3-4 hrs. If I was to quit would i get unemployment benefits? Please help I am desperate to know.

Check your state's specific unemployment site, but often if you have good cause to quit, and have worked enough to get the benefits, the investigation into your leaving should vindicate you, and you should get your benefits. HOWEVER, from the description of your environment I would DOCUMENT everything. Emails, phone calls, dates and times - write it down. Otherwise, it's a they-said/you-said situation. Good luck.

Just curious, but is there any way to collect unemployment in one lump sum or get larger payments? I am collecting my paymenys weekly. I checked the status of my payments today and there is plenty there to get me through untill my seasonal resort employment opens again but what I don't understand is: if I have a good chunk sitting there with my name on it, why can't I get a larger weekly payment so I can pay my rent on time, instead of having to make three payments- two of which I must pay a $50 late fee...? That's an extra $100 I could be spending on groceries every month. Sorry, kind of two questions in one, perhaps you could answer them both? Thank you.

To answer how do you pay your rent on unemployment:Fi rst you must consider these small details; When you get up and turn on the light and flush the toilet your a hero somebody gets a check from you at the end of the month. When you star your car and let it warm up your a hero somebody gets a check from you for having a car and the taxes, license,o h and the nice thing is if you get pulled over and get a ticket your a hero you get to pay.Now just be happy like your mommy said that your better off in third world countries and think positive quit bitching and pay your taxes you crook.

Does it take Ca Fed-Ed more days to deposit money on to the debit card then a regular claim processing since it requires several job contacts?

In general (I know it varies from state to state) when you request your benefits, do they direct deposit them the next day? (If you're set up for DD of course).

My job recently got eliminated and wa let go but i received one month severence package in increments of q 2 weeks as if I was getting paid at work. Do I have to claim this on my unemployment when I check in weekly . For example if I received a gross amt of 1900.00 do I claim half one week and the other half the next until my severence if done. I go two different answers when I called Georgia labor board. All i need to know if i have to claim this as income when I call every week
