Louisiana Unemployment FAQ

The law sets qualifying requirements in three main areas: your past wages, your job separation, and ongoing availability and work search requirements. You must meet all of the following qualifying requirements in order to receive benefits.

Past Wages

You must have earned enough wages in your base period. The base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim.

Reason for separation from your last work

You must be unemployed or partially unemployed through no fault of your own in order to receive benefits.

Ongoing availability and work search

You must be physically able and available to work. You must also be actively seeking work. If you are temporarily laid off and have a definite return-to-work date, your work search requirements may be waived.

How do I file for unemployment benefits?

Before filing a claim, you will need to have the following information available:

Your Social Security Number.

The names, addresses, and phone numbers of all your employers for the last 18 months.

The name and local number of your union hall, if applicable.

Alien Registration Number, if applicable.

If you are unable to locate the above required information within the first week you are unemployed, contact the UI Call Center @ 1-866-783-5567. Delay in reporting will affect your benefits.

Warning: The last page of the Internet application will state that your claim has been completed and will give you a confirmation number. Unless you receive a confirmation number, your claim will not be processed.

I have wages earned in LA but taxed for UE in IL. In an attempt to have these additional wages applied to my claim, I was told my claim would become inelegible. Just curious as to what this means. I attempted to open a claim in IL but was told since I have an open claim in LA that IL would be unable to process my claim. Having these additional wages would bring my LA quarterly avg up $12k. If I'm unable to apply the additional IL taxed wages to my LA claim or it in fact does make my claim inelgible, I would like to know the steps involved in canceling my LA claim so that I may open an IL claim. To put it simply, in LA I qualify for $80/week with my current claim. I can't survive on that. Applying my additional wages would bring my benefit up to a "livable" amount in LA or IL. I am at my wits end, please help!

I recently filed a claim against my last employer. I went in to give my notice on Monday because on Friday he yelled, was rude and insulted my intelligence. I've heard him do this many times before to other and I just refused to accept that he could treat me that way. When I gave him my notice he terminated me immediately. By the way I got a $1.00 raise on Thursday before the blowup. Is this worth fighting for or do employers have the right to do what they want.

I receive 36.00 a week. I can not live off that. You can only pay 5.00 dollars on a bill. And please don't let your child come home and need money for school. I guess live dayby day with the LORD'S HELP. You also, put in applications, you call them back, but you never hear from them. Even when you go in person or put your information on there website.

I quit job to go to another that after one month laid me off and no plans to rehire. I filed for u.emp. from employer i quit in August and i keep getting letters saying that i can not get paid due to a issue with seperation from employment and if i dont have a decision in 4 weeks to call. now it is been almost 3 months with same letter. i did call a representative in sept. and explained all details and she was suppose to fix the error which was that they did not have my last job on computer the one i was laid off from. she corrected and said i should be paid with in 4 weeks cause. i have called and called, 76 logged phone calls since i started logging in sept. i have talked with a attorney friend of mine and said that it probably is the employer causing problems or the lack of due diligence on unemp. office and lack of urgency and concern.
i want to resolve this without obtaining an attorney first and save that for last option. i have contacted the D.O.L. and mentioned for me to do this and few other things first and if no results get back to him in 2 weeks with my documented efforts and names. my questions are as follows..
need to know a contact number other than 866-783-5567 for i am disabled with no phone and need to discuss my personal situation in order to resolve.
what is a contact email address in which i may send same?
Name and contact information for legal department?
thank you,
David
