Louisiana Unemployment

Eligibility Requirements

The law sets qualifying requirements in three main areas: your past wages, your job separation, and ongoing availability and work search requirements. You must meet all of the following qualifying requirements in order to receive benefits.

Past Wages

You must have earned enough wages in your base period. The base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim.

Reason for separation from your last work

You must be unemployed or partially unemployed through no fault of your own in order to receive benefits.

Ongoing availability and work search

You must be physically able and available to work. You must also be actively seeking work. If you are temporarily laid off and have a definite return-to-work date, your work search requirements may be waived.

  • Your Social Security Number.
  • The names, addresses, and phone numbers of all your employers for the last 18 months.
  • The name and local number of your union hall, if applicable.
  • Alien Registration Number, if applicable.
    • If you are unable to locate the above required information within the first week you are unemployed, contact the UI Call Center @ 1-866-783-5567. Delay in reporting will affect your benefits.

I have wages earned in LA but taxed for UE in IL. In an attempt to have these additional wages applied to my claim, I was told my claim would become inelegible. Just curious as to what this means. I attempted to open a claim in IL but was told since I have an open claim in LA that IL would be unable to process my claim. Having these additional wages would bring my LA quarterly avg up $12k. If I'm unable to apply the additional IL taxed wages to my LA claim or it in fact does make my claim inelgible, I would like to know the steps involved in canceling my LA claim so that I may open an IL claim. To put it simply, in LA I qualify for $80/week with my current claim. I can't survive on that. Applying my additional wages would bring my benefit up to a "livable" amount in LA or IL. I am at my wits end, please help!

I recently filed a claim against my last employer. I went in to give my notice on Monday because on Friday he yelled, was rude and insulted my intelligence. I've heard him do this many times before to other and I just refused to accept that he could treat me that way. When I gave him my notice he terminated me immediately. By the way I got a $1.00 raise on Thursday before the blowup. Is this worth fighting for or do employers have the right to do what they want.

I received my first check it was $254, but my second check was $84. I want to know why the decrease? I can not survive on $84 a week.

I receive 36.00 a week. I can not live off that. You can only pay 5.00 dollars on a bill. And please don't let your child come home and need money for school. I guess live dayby day with the LORD'S HELP. You also, put in applications, you call them back, but you never hear from them. Even when you go in person or put your information on there website.

I quit job to go to another that after one month laid me off and no plans to rehire. I filed for u.emp. from employer i quit in August and i keep getting letters saying that i can not get paid due to a issue with seperation from employment and if i dont have a decision in 4 weeks to call. now it is been almost 3 months with same letter. i did call a representative in sept. and explained all details and she was suppose to fix the error which was that they did not have my last job on computer the one i was laid off from. she corrected and said i should be paid with in 4 weeks cause. i have called and called, 76 logged phone calls since i started logging in sept. i have talked with a attorney friend of mine and said that it probably is the employer causing problems or the lack of due diligence on unemp. office and lack of urgency and concern.
i want to resolve this without obtaining an attorney first and save that for last option. i have contacted the D.O.L. and mentioned for me to do this and few other things first and if no results get back to him in 2 weeks with my documented efforts and names. my questions are as follows..
need to know a contact number other than 866-783-5567 for i am disabled with no phone and need to discuss my personal situation in order to resolve.
what is a contact email address in which i may send same?
Name and contact information for legal department?
thank you,

I worked at my last job in Louisiana for 4 years, but decided to relocate to Atlanta. I've been job searching for over a month, and still no work. Do I qualify for unemployment?

I got fired from my job the first week in August and filed online for unemployment the following week. I have since received 2 letters stating that I am ineligible because my income was not over the base pay. However, it is. I have gotten my previous employer to email me a break down of my paychecks by quarter. The unemployment office is leaving off all of my income from the previous year. I have contacted them numerous times and have faxed in all of the information that they requested (the wage breakdown from my employer and my W2). I haven't received a letter from them stating if I am eligible or eneligible. The other 2 times, I had received my letter from them by now. Is this good news? Does this mean that I will finally be getting my unemployment money? Also, when I go online it still shows that I have been paid $0 for the weeks that I have filed. When I do receive my money, will it show up online at that point? I do not know what to do. I am worried that I will receive a letter stating that I am ineligible again, even though I am eligible. I don't know what to do if that happens because calling them and faxing them the requested documentation has done nothing. Might I add, I have been looking for a job during this timeand have uploaded my resume to the laworks.net website and am registered with the virtual recruiter on that site. I apologize that this is so much, I am just at my wits end because it seems I keep hitting a wall.

I filed for unemployment 2 weeks ago. I received a letter stating what i will be receiving in benefits and a form to fill out asking for the reason of separation. The form was suppose to be returned within 10 days, but I misplaced the form and just today found it and sent it off. I missed the deadline by a week. How will this effect my benefits. I've continued to file my claim every week. Will I get back pay? or will they deny my claim if that form was late? Thank you!

I filed for unemployment on the 14th of November. Talked to the main office and they said they would send me a check and any money for the weeks previous to that. It has been two weeks since I have heard anything from them. I have tried to call but, get put on hold for hours. And then it disconnects me. I hate the listening to the phone directory machine. I need to talk to a real person. What should I do. Wait it out for a few weeks to see if the check is in the mail. Or, try to re-apply again on line. Or, simply go to the office to yell at them for how crappy their phone system is set up.I worked in Texas for 4 years and was fired. Will the unemployment office let me know the status of my application or, if my previous company will not give me unemployment benefits. Confused and unhappy.

I live in Missouri and have been working offshire(louisi ana) for 6 months and now it's been over three weeks since I've been dispatched. they are saying it's due to the weather and don't know when things will pick up. I haven't received anything saying I'm laid off they just stopped working me. I have never collected and would rather work but have to have an income. How long before I can file or can I? And how should I go about it?

If I'm getting UI benefits from being laid off, and am actively searching for a new job, can I also enroll in school to better my job prospects? Part time only or is full time ok too?
