Tennessee Unemployment Extension

If your Tennessee unemployment benefits have run out you may be eligible to receive extended unemployment benefits through one of the state or federal unemployment extension programs.

This federal unemployment extension programs is called Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (Also known as EUC08).

Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08) includes 4 stages, or tiers. Each tier has a different maximum time period for which your unemployment extension will last:

Tier 1 EUC08: 20 week maximum unemployment extension.
Tier 2 EUC08: 14 week maximum unemployment extension.
Tier 3 EUC08: 13 week maximum unemployment extension.
Tier 4 EUC08: 6 week maximum unemployment extension.

If you use up all of your regular unemployment benefits, normally you don't have to apply for an unemployment extension because the system automatically applies for you, if you are eligible. It is very important that you keep track of your benefits to make sure you receive your unemployment extension if you are eligible.

If you get close to your unemployment benefits running out, give your unemployment counselor a call to check to see what you have to do in order to get they unemployment extension.

There is another type of unemployment extension called Federal-State Extended Duration (FED-ED), more commonly referred to as Extended Benefits (EB). You will only qualify for the EB unemployment extension if you have used up all of your regular unemployment benefits and also used up all of your EUC08 unemployment extension.

If you qualify for the EB unemployment extension you will receive additional benefits equal to 20 weeks or 80% of the maximum benefit amount on the original unemployment claim, whichever amount is less.

I have several questions! First my unemployeement ran out, it came as a shock to me because it stated that I still had money that had not been used but when I called the woman in the office explained that it didnt matter if any money was left because the benefit year supercedes the monetary base. She said that I could reapply but I would probably be denied and then may get the emergency extension. I did reapply and I did get denied in December, it stated that I had not earned enough in the past year to qualify (of course I hadnt worked!). I opened the mail today and had a monetary determination letter from January. It does not say that I am denied and as a different weekly benefit amount amount than the previous weekly benefit amt (which was higher). Question: Does this means that I had been approved for the emergency extention???
Question: I stopped doing the weekly updates. What do I need to do now? Do I start doing them again? Will I get a back check for December and January? We are in severe fianancial strains and I just can't think clearly from the stress... I can't seem to figure any of this out.

Next part --- I got a job this past weekend! It's at a church and I am only guarenteed 4 hours a week. So I could work 4- 32 hours a week, but most likely about 10 hours a week.
Question: IF I have been approved for extention, what do I need to do about this....When I do my online weekly form do I enter the amount I made and continue to get the difference in the check? I get paid on the 15th and last day of the month. Do I just enter the amounts made on the week of the 15th and last week of the month when I have paycheck in hand... or do I divide it out somehow and report it weekly even though I am paid biweekly from the church.
Question: IF I am approved, since I didnt know until today and havent been filling in the online verification forms, have I accidentally forfeited my unemployement??

Hi April.
Only reason I know this, and didn't memorize it is because I just did my weekly certification. If you got a letter, WITH an amount that should mean you were extended...you will receive 80% of the max (I take that to be what you were getting weekly) or receive a check for 20 more weeks, which ever is lowest, Congrats on finding a job!! :) Now there is a limit on that..you can earn up to $50.00 but cannot remember if that is per day or week. Sorry, I skimmed this part, I did because I will prob have to do the same...oh, if you were approved they automatically file this for you. there are 4 tiers, then when that is used up there is ONE MORE extention you may qualify for. Keep doing your weekly certs..and when finish go back to the Claims ui section and click on the link that gives you all this info you need. Sorry I couldn't type this out with ALL the info,,,but, remember I just skimmed it. Again Congrats and Good Luck! :)

I have run out of my unemployment. how do I file an extension? I have been looking for a job and have had no luck. I have been calling for 2 weeks now and keep getting to same message. That due to high call volume my call cannot be excepted at this time and to try again later. I have been calling at least 6 times a day!!!! What do I do once I have filed my extension? This past Monday when I called to do my weekly certification it asked me if I had filed something about job hunting. I didn't know what to do! I haven't received anything in the mail or in my e-mail about filing anything! What did this mean? Please help I'm a single Mom of 2 and if I cannot pay the bills I will get kicked out of my apartment!!!!!

this new question is refering to wether or not you have been keeping a log on paper of the places you have applied for work, they require you to keep a log now and have at least 2 places a week you have applied or inquired about a job,to be sent to them if they ask for it !!!

I didn't see that anywhere on the site. What about job apps that require you to fill out online? (which are pretty much all of them these days) No printer...does it give other options in those, that you noticed? Also, what section is this in? so I can go read this? Thanks

To get through on the phone, you have to redial constantly for maybe an hour or so. Make sure you know your pin number that you use for your certifications cause if you don't have/know it the automated system will hang up on you and you have to start all over trying to get through.

I only have 2 weeks left in my original claim. Who do u call in TN to find out if u are eligible for an extension?

The only reason I know that answer to this is because I skimmed over the section covering extensions. If you were approved to begin with, and your benefits have ran out, yet you are still searching, the Unemployment Office will file for you, so you will not have to do the whole process over again, Good Luck :)

I skimmed over this when I did my certification just a few minutes ago. When all tiers have been used there is ONE MORE extension that you may qualify for. This one is a bit different insofar that it is not a State funded, but a Federal Funded extension. I would give them a call, they may need additional information...and there may be different paperwork to be filled out. Call them ASAP so you can get this looked into before ALL your funds are gone...they due run on a quarterly calendar, so, if I were you, I wouldn't want to take the risk of additional help. Good Luck

My regular unemployment benefits have run out. How do I file for an extension? When I log on to my account, it also has outdated information on there from 3 years ago. When I call, there is absolutely no way to get through. I called the very first thing in the morning and was put on hold for 3 hours until my cell battery ran out. WHAT IS GOING ON OVER THERE? Do they only have 2 people to answer calls from the whole state?

I have customer service call center exp. HINT HINT. No One can get through, i have all min documented on phone bill over 200min in 2weeks of calls u get a message to call later and they hangup then u call again again again. and over 200$ on bill just from calling UI Office hoping to get through. i feel like i won the lottery if i get to talk to someone. I did talk with (jonathan?) who told me i should have automatically been rolled over to the next tier but was not for some Reason? and also that I still had money left in the tier i was currently in but for some reason my checks quit coming. i was still calling certifying every week.(jonathan) said he fixed it for me that i should have my check deposited with back pay by the end of the week ,the end of the week came and went ,No check,so i started again monday calling by wed. i reached someone who didnt see anything documente had spoke with someone the previous week. anything that jonathan told me it wasnt there nothing, so i went over the same issue,he told me he would fix it,,and had no idea who JONATHAN was,??i would think there would be names of the people who logged into my account and made changes to it and the date it was done but i guess this is not part. of procedure. Why did my UI checks just stop for no reason,no one knows why? Has anyone else experienced problems like this?? I was told my unemployment would not stop until i received a letter in the mail stating i was out and no longer eligible, its been 4weeks no checks, and nothing in the mail or phone from tn unemployment office and the nearest unemployment. office is a 2 hour drive away. anyone else with problems communicating with tn ui office and what do you do? Also Iv been trying to certify iam still calling every tuesday but it will not accept my ss#. ??

I have been trying for days to get through to the Tennessee Unemployment support line. I continue to get the message that, due to large call volume, they can not take my call,,,,,, good bye. My Tier II EUC has run out and I am trying to see what to do to extend. I can not find options online. Do I just keep trying to call, or is there an online option I can use?

I initially filed for unemployment in November 2012 due to lack of work with a company. I was given 20 weeks of unemployment compensation. I just received my last distribution today of $81.00 so I was wondering what I would need to do to file an extension. I checked my benefits information on the TN Dept. of Labor website and the information that is displayed is not concerning 2012 or 2013 payments like it has been in the past (just last week). The information displayed is from 2008 when I was unemployed and filed for the first time. It displays my most recent separation date as 08/29/2008 and not 11/02/2012. It also has changed the benefit year ending date as 08/29/2009 and lists my remaining balance as $1100.00. I am really confused because just last week the information related to unemployment was for 2012 and 2013 and now it has gone back to a previous time when I first was unemployed. Does this mean I will not get an extension for my 2012 unemployment or do I have some money left from 2009 when I was unemployed for the first time. This is very confusing because I do not know what to do now. I don't know if I qualify for an extension or what. Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I wanted to know if I need to do anything concerning extended benefits. My unemployment runs out this week. I have done research and what I have found suggests that I do nothing as I will be automatically submitted for federal unemployment benefits. I am somewhat skeptical as I have received no letter or call indicating that this has been done. I cannot reach anyone at the Tennessee Unemployment office. Is there anything I should do, or do I sit back and see what happens?

I have run out of unemployment after the 26 week period and the "expected" automated Fed extension has not occurred. Have tried to call but of course like everyone else, after hours and hours of repeated attempts have not been able to speak to anyone, due to the "high volume" of calls or put on hold and call dropped after an hour or so. Information on how to file an extension would be helpful! Thanks in advance!

I am down to my last two weeks of the 26 weeks state unemployment in Tennessee. What do I need to do to start the extended benefits or do they automatically start. I have tried to call the Unemployment office but in TN it is impossible. They continue to tell you they "cannot take your call at this time - please call back" In the last 6 months I have never been able to actually talk to a person. Thanks

I ran out of Tier 3 benefits this week. Does TN have Tier 4 benefits. I know in the past, I would received a letter (Tier 2 and 3) just saying that I qualified for the next tier, normally a week or two after my benefits stopped. But I don't know if there is a Tier 4. I guess it depends on the unemployment benefit rate in the state. Does anyone know if TN has Tier 4 benefits. It is so frustrating trying to call. It will only say that they are overloaded with calls and after going through all of that it simply says "goodbye" and hangs up.

I drew unemployment for the 1st time last yr. I got to draw from Sept 2015 until Jan 2016. When my benefits ran out in January I was told I could reapply in September of this yr. Is this true & if so what do I need to do? I have called the unemployment line & left several messages & have not received a call back yet & it's been over 2 weeks. I just need help with finding out if I can draw more since I ran out in January.
