New Jersey Unemployment Extension

If your New Jersey unemployment benefits have run out you may be eligible to receive extended unemployment benefits through one of the state or federal unemployment extension programs.

This federal unemployment extension programs is called Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (Also known as EUC08).

Emergency Unemployment Compensation, 2008 (EUC08) includes 4 stages, or tiers. Each tier has a different maximum time period for which your unemployment extension will last:

Tier 1 EUC08: 20 week maximum unemployment extension.
Tier 2 EUC08: 14 week maximum unemployment extension.
Tier 3 EUC08: 13 week maximum unemployment extension.
Tier 4 EUC08: 6 week maximum unemployment extension.

If you use up all of your regular unemployment benefits, normally you don't have to apply for an unemployment extension because the system automatically applies for you, if you are eligible. It is very important that you keep track of your benefits to make sure you receive your unemployment extension if you are eligible.

If you get close to your unemployment benefits running out, give your unemployment counselor a call to check to see what you have to do in order to get they unemployment extension.

There is another type of unemployment extension called Federal-State Extended Duration (FED-ED), more commonly referred to as Extended Benefits (EB). You will only qualify for the EB unemployment extension if you have used up all of your regular unemployment benefits and also used up all of your EUC08 unemployment extension.

If you qualify for the EB unemployment extension you will receive additional benefits equal to 20 weeks or 80% of the maximum benefit amount on the original unemployment claim, whichever amount is less.

I have been receiving NJ unemployment since 7/31/11 and my claim runs out in a couple of weeks. I was told originally that I would be eligible for extended benefits but the news out of Washington seems to be that there will not be extended benefits. Can you tell me what,if any, extensions I am eligible for? I am 60 and I send out resumes every week but no luck yet. Thank you, George

I applied for unemployment 3/4/12 and am concerned because my benefits will run out in September 2012. There is a lot of conflicting information on line as to the extended benefits. I've been working for 40 years and this is the first time I am unemployed. Can you tell me what the latest information is.. Thank you.

I am currently on EUC Tier 4 and awaiting news on any extensions passed into law. Effective 12/29/12, I am officially cut off from receiving the last 2 weeks left in there from my benefit amount. Do you know if EB will be available IF it's passed into law? I live in NJ and I can't seem to find exactly what the answer is. Thank you.

Last week, I exhausted my original 26 weeks of unemployment insurance with the State of NJ. I just checked the claim inquiry section to see if I was approved for EUC and it appears I was given the fact the monetary summary reflects 14 additional weeks of money in what's called the "extended benefits balance" section. Hence, I tried to file a claim for weekly benefits but a message popped up saying "The benefit year on your unemployment claim dated 1/22/2012 has expired. No unemployment benefits are available to you at this time." I'm confused as to why I just didn't transition into the EUC. Do I have to do something on my end to get the EUC activated?
