How to Reopen an Existing Michigan Unemployment Claim

It may become necessary for you to reopen an existing Michigan unemployment claim if you suspend or cancel your unemployment because you found a job, and then later became unemployed again.

Generally, you can reopen an existing unemployment claim by simply filing a weekly certifcation online or by phone -- just like you did every week when you receiving unemployment previously.

In some cases, it may be necessary to speak to an unemployment counselor or start the process all over again in order to reopen an existing unemployment claim in Michigan. If this is the case, contact your unemployment counselor to get exact instructions on how to proceed.

My husband is currently on unemployment in MI and is considering going into substance rehab. If he does not contact MARVIN for a month (2 times), will he be able to re-open his same claim once released? Would we still be able to collect unemployment after his inpatient rehab has finished?

Other option, if he can still call MARVIN and answer NO to "Are you currently able to work?" question, would he be able to keep his claim open and continue once out of rehab? Would this take away 2 weeks of his 20 week allotment?

Is there a way to suspend unemployment for a month?
