How to Cancel Michigan Unemployment

When you find a new job you can no longer receive Michigan unemployment benefits and may need to officially cancel your Michigan unemployment.

In order to cancel your unemployment claim, you can:

1. Call, send a letter, or email to your unemployment counselor letting them know that you have found a new job.
2. Stop filing your weekly certification.

If you happen to receive an unemployment check while you are working, make sure to call your unemployment counselor to let them know. You may need to return the check - but this will be better than any possible penalties that you could be responsible for if you are found to be recieving unemployment benefits while working.

I have been collecting unemployment since I was laid off in April. I miscalculated the week I was supposed to make a claim (the week ending in 7/27). I instead made the claim a week later (the week ending in 8/3). After reading the handbook I've discovered that I will not receive any money simply because I made an error in calculation. My issue however, is that this was my last claim that I wanted to make. I have bills to pay and no money to be able to do so. I recently found a job and I start 8/7 and will have to cancel my Unemployment claim. When I researched how to cancel it said to contact my unemployment counselor. I haven't had a counselor or help of any kind from the unemployment agency. I gave up on trying to call the unemployment office because every time I do I'm told to call back later due to the lines being busy. I'm just hoping to be able to speak to someone directly to resolve this issue and ultimately cancel my claim.
