Michigan Unemployment Requirements

In order to start your unemployment, MI unemployment requirements include the following:

1. You are totally unemployed. Depending on your vocation and industry, you may qualify for unemployment if you have had your hours reduced.
2. You have worked and earned a minimum amount of wages in work covered by unemployment tax during the past 18 months.
3. You have lost your job through no fault of your own. If you were laid-off you will qualify for unemployment. In most cases, if you were fired for cause - you will not be eligible to collect unemployment. If you were fired for cause, you SHOULD apply for unemployment anyway, just in case you are eligible to get it.
4. You are able and available for work. If you are unable to work because of disability or medical condition, you may not meet the Michigan unemployment requirements, but you should apply anyway. If you are not eligible for unemployment, you may be eligible to collect disability benefits, and the case worker at the unemployment office will be able to direct you on how to apply for disability.
5. You are registered for work at your local Workforce Development Center. You must do this when you apply for unemployment, and every week when you certify your weekly claim.
6. You are actively seeking work. You must apply to a minimum of two jobs per week.

To continue receiving weekly unemployment benefits, MI unemployment requirements state that you must file a 'weekly claim' by doing the following:

1. Meet all of the MI unemployment requirements listed above.
2. Apply for at least two jobs each week.
3. Contact the Michigan unemployment office to file your 'weekly claim'. You can do this via phone or on the internet.

If my wife and i quit our jobs in CA to relocate to MI would we be able to draw umemployment benefits? The reason of the move would be to help take care of my ailing father who needs someone to care for him. His doctor has recommended that he would greatly benefit from this.

This fraud pure and simple. I know I would not be the fall guy, I guess it is divorce time if she truely did this without your knowing. Anyway, at the very least you'll be paying it all back because the UIA will figure it out sooner or later.

I am currently collecting unemployment but my doctor wants to put me on disability of which my auto insurance should pay from an accident in November. Every time i contact them they claim that they are waiting on documents. I don't know what to do. i can try to work with restrictions maybe 2 days a week I certainly can do no lifting or bending. If i put in this claim with the insurance company Im not sure how long it will take for me to get any money at all. Im afraid of not having any income and not being able to at least pay some bills. What should I do????

I am retired since 12/10. Circumstances changed so the money isn't enough to live on. I took a job in a Deli Department part-time. Their PT is anything under 34 hours weekly. I was working from 29 to 32, I am a young 59 years I had no idea I would have this hip, leg, knee and foot pain or I'd never taken the job. After working about a month I realized I couldn't do the job; stocking, cleaning the Deli at night moving the fryers etc to clean behind, standing up to 8 hours daily, bending over and reaching into the salad case, shaving meats on the slicers etc. I asked if they had anything like entering stock into the computer, office, on the floor anything without the excessiveness of the deli. They said I hadn't been there long enough and that they had no openings at the time. I filled out the request to reduce hours with my supervisors help, she said she would help me fill it out so they would believe I was still a team player. That didn't help, I was punished the first week and they only worked me 8 hours. Afterward they reduced my hours to 26 (I had requested 25 weekly I was happy), then the next week it increased to 27, 29, 29, 32 I was back up to what I was before I requested the decrease. I have been looking daily for jobs PT and FT that would allow me to sit and stand, unsuccessfully. Some I hear from denying my application some I hear nothing. I really can't take the pain much longer, motrin doesn't help and I really don't want to start narcotics for this pain which is what the physician suggest. My Chiropracter has asked me to reduce my hours if possible if I can't quit, the physician has suggested test, x-rays, and therapy all very expensive. I didn't have this much trouble before this job and believe that if I left it those problems would resolve themselves. Do you think I could quit this job, draw unemployment in Michigan until I can find another job. Thanks

I had to stop working (third time) since auto accident in 2009. I cannot stand, sit, or walk without pain. My MRI states that I have severe stenosis (Lumbar) and the doctor has suggested surgery. The medicine for pain makes me sleepy and makes it hard to work. I am an administrative assistant and been working for the company 20 years. My FMLA is going to expire and I am not able to return. Would I be able to collect unemployment? I have applied for disability, however, if awarded, it could be months, even years. What should I do??? Help!!!

I have been robbed at gunpoint twice since Aug 28th. My employers do not plan to do anything different to ensure our safety. I honestly do no know if I can go back there after this last time (I was held for 15 minutes while the robber waited for the safe to open) If I decide to quit, can I collect unemployment until I can find another job?

I was fired for being late to work by 2 to 3 minutes. There policy states you have 7 minutes to punch in till your late. It's been 11 weeks and still no unemployment. I call in every time i supposed to. It tells me I'm entitled to weeks and number weeks you've been paid for is 0 weeks 20 weeks remaining. I try to call unemployment so i can talk to someone but there always busy and then it hangs up
Been calling them for a month now I would just like to know if I'm getting unemployment or not. And being late for work was due to my huaband being in an accident and my employer knew that and said it was fine do what i had to do to take care of him. Thank You

Was this resolved? Sound slike you worked for the same company i work for now. If it says you have 20 weeks but paid for ZERO. Ment they are having in issue getting things rsolved or that the company is telling them a lie on why you were fired so you wont get your unemployment. Just if it is denied, file against the decision and let it be heard by the resolution Judge.

When asked "Did you quit any work, fail to accept any job offer or get fired from any job" I said yes but wasn't asked to elaborate & now I'm only being paid for one week of unemployment instead of two, why? I turned down a job because the offer was so poor I wouldn't be able to survive so why am I being penalized? Everyone I know told me to just lie but that isn't the kind of person I am & now I'm not getting paid for being honest. What do I need to do to receive my full two weeks pay for unemployment?

Melissa, no you can not collect unemployment.. not from michigan anyway because you are no longer a resident of Michigan. I don't think you can get it from OHIO since you have never paid into it while working in OHIO. In michigan you must have worked so many quarters in order to be ablke to collect. Also, you quit your job on your own free will... and they dont consider moving to be with your better half a legit reason for quiting a job. Sorry to bresk the news to you.

I have been off work for 8 weeks, due to surgery/disability. My disability claim was denied by insurance because I was not "full time." Am I eligible to receive unemployment?
Reply | Reply with quote | Quote
# Kim 2013-01-31 08:25
Tammy, I knwo for a fact Michigan will not let you claim unemployment on this matter. In the state of Michigan you MUST BE ABKE TO WORK FULL TIME. If you medicla issue is making it where you can not work... more so full time. You won't be able to collect. I should know, i went thru this about seven months ago. Only difference is, I could work but my work just didn't wish to accommadate a Dr. request which wasn't time consuming or unreasonable so therefore i won my case and did get unemployment.

Hi! Close to the end of July, I ended up with a bunch of psin my my foot while at work, found out the next day I had fractured two bone sin my foot. once healed since then, but the other did not. I was out of work for six weeks even tho my Dr. had sent me to work with a note stating I could work, just she was reuesting it be adjusted to where i Could be off my busted foot off and on thru the day which they could have done, but the company decided they didnt wish to try to work it out so put me on Medical leave for six weeks. I did end up collecting unemplyment for 5 of those six weeks since I could have still worked. I went back to work Beginning of September 2012... Now. because of a cold and a bad ear infection, due to company policy, I have called in more than my alloted three times in six months. Which means I am on probation and if I end up having to call in for any reason within the next 6 months they can and will fire me. My question is if they fire me, am i able to collect unemployment still even tho I claimed for six weeks about 6 months ago? I do live in the state of Michigan just to make this known.

I have worked for the same company for 3 years. I have held 3 different titles. Most recently all of my co-workers quit, putting all their responsibilitie s on me. The work environment is hostile and I am being forced to resign because I cant keep up with all the added responsibilitie s that dont fall under my job duties. Will I be able to collect benefits while I search for another job?

Had 30hrs + at work, been there 2 1/2 yrs, recently was threatened and called racial slurs by a male coworker, also phoned his sister to come there and attack me. He didnt get fired, i couldnt work with him. To avoid him i didnt mind losing a few hours. But then they cut me by 50%.. after i stated i could not survive off less then 20 hrs. Wouldn't i qualify?

I had emergency surgery which put me out of work for 4 weeks and may possibly need another surgery which may put me off longer should I file for unemployment or try and get short term disability? I have only been working at my job for 7 and a half months.

I filed for social security disability in October 2011 and lost my job due to abscences for illness in March 2012. I filed for and collected unemployment while still waiting on a decision from social security. If I am awarded benefits from social security will I have to pay back unemployment. I live in Michigan.

I have been working full time for the past 22 months for the same employer. That job, however, will be ending in the next 2 to 4 weeks (the project will have been completed and all 12 of us will be laid off indefinitely).

I may be able to take a new job in the next few days or perhaps a week that may only last 2 to 3 months (another project -- but for a different employer). If I take that job and it ends as expected in mid- July resulting in me being laid off, would I lose my eligibility for unemployment because I'd have only been with the new employer for less than 3 months (even though I'd have been employed continuously for over a year)?

I have worked for my company for over 8 years. Salaried $720 gross. Can I collect unemployment if I continue to work 20 hours there (will be making 360 gross), or will I have to cut that even more to get unemployment? I need to know how many hours I can actually work (that is why I am giving #'s) and not have my benefits go down any. I know there is a formula used, but I am hoping with giving some amounts, someone can give me a clearer idea of approximately how many hours I can continue to work and still get unemployment until I help my boss through this though time.

I was approved for Tier 1 EUC benefits. Problem is I haven't worked for the company for ten years.
I won't collect because it is fraud.

MI phone NEVER answers, online emails go unanswered.

Can you tell me how many years of employment UIA uses
from the past. Thanks.

Okay I am on restrictions and desk work only. I am a PCT but their is also a PCT on my same unit on restrictions as well. So my job calls one of us off ever time we are on the schedule to work together. Which makes my hours short I am considered a full time employee but my vacation hours is running low so can I file for reduced hours because my hours are getting cut which is the job doing not mine.

My job gives a raise every 4 months for the first three years, I've been there 16 months and received two. The had me on first shift, moved me to second, hired me in on second and placed me on third shortly after.
The department they "hired" me on pays a dollar more an hour, I have not seen that, nor will I after talks with the company.
I see others transferring from department to department and shift to other shifts, but they tell me (because I want off of third shift) "You can't be replaced."
I've tried to 'bump' with the seniority, but they just won't move me.
What am I supposed to do? I'm in a stand still as they told me that I'm not allowed to seek another job while I work there.
Does any of these things allow me to qualify for unemployment if I quit or am fired for attendance as they keep switching me from shift to shift?
By the way, I'm now on first shift since I broke a rib at work. Back to thirds I go after it heals...
