How to Reopen an Existing Illinois Unemployment Claim

It may become necessary for you to reopen an existing Illinois unemployment claim if you suspend or cancel your unemployment because you found a job, and then later became unemployed again.

Generally, you can reopen an existing unemployment claim by simply filing a weekly certifcation online or by phone -- just like you did every week when you receiving unemployment previously.

In some cases, it may be necessary to speak to an unemployment counselor or start the process all over again in order to reopen an existing unemployment claim in Illinois. If this is the case, contact your unemployment counselor to get exact instructions on how to proceed.

Not sure if my message went through so I'll ask once again. I was laid off Feb 16, 2011 and collected unemployment benefits for six weeks. I started a new job April 4, 2011. I've determined that the new job isnt working out for me. Can I leave my current position and go back to collecting unemployment benefits from my previous employer?

I was laid off in December 2012 and collect unemployment for 3 weeks. I went back to work in January 2013 and am now being laid off again for 2 weeks. Do I need to put in an additional waiting week?

My job was eliminated in June 2011, and I applied for and received unemployment benefits until December 2012. At that time, the IDES told me that I had exhausted my benefits, so I stopped certifying online. Then a week ago, IDES sent me an email that said I was eligible to apply for Tier 4 benefits. I went to the IDES office and filled out new forms, and the rep there said to keep certifying as I had been. I tried to certify online today, my certification day, and the system told me that I had to reopen my claim. How do I do that? Thanks for your help.

I had a hearing and was found eligible. It said my date was Tuesday to certify. The lady said I did not need to certify for 2 weeks after I had my hearing. I logged in to certify and it said to certify on Thursday or Friday. Today it says I cannot certify.
