How to Report Illinois Unemployment Fraud

If you want to know how to report unemployment fraud, you must first be sure that someone is committing unemployment fraud. In the state of Illinois it is a crime to knowingly collect unemployment benefits that you are not eligible to receive, and this is considered unemployment fraud. BUT, it is very important to note that IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO WORK WHILE YOU ARE COLLECTING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS.

You are able to work at a job and make a certain amount of money while still collecting unemployment benefits. When you apply for unemployment, this amount will be determined, and how this works will be explained to you by your unemployment counselor.

If you do work while you are collecting unemployment benefits, it is VERY important that you follow the rules given to you by your unemployment counselor, which includes reporting where you work, how much you make every week, etc.

If you suspect someone of committing unemployment fraud, you can contact the unemployment office to report them. You may be able to remain anonymous, or you may have to give your name and contact information to report them.

When you make your report, be sure to give as much detailed information as possible, including the following:

  • Their name
  • Their address
  • Their phone number
  • Where they are working
  • How much money they're making

If you know that someone is committing unemployment fraud, you can report them by contacting your local unemployment office.

My best friend retired from the company I worked for 1 year before I got laid off. Our company closed, so I recieve unemployment. She left on her own a full year before and is recieving unemployment. I don't understand how this is fair. She gets her retirement package, and pension. Someone that retires shouldn't be eligible should they?

What if your employer lied on you and said you refused a job? You were informed of this at least six months after you have been collecting unemployment, so you have to pay back what you were receiving. What rights do you have?

somebody we know filed an unemployment, getting unemployment check right now but still working for the same company for years and gets paid cash because of his unemployment status. Is this fraud?
Could somebody could look into this? Cause I dont think it's fair for other people. Besides, his wife makes good money so he doesn't really need to to this but he knows that he can get away with it (if we let him). Thanks

I know someone who has been collecting unemployment benefits for almost 2 years now. He collects approximately $250/wk after taxes. He has also been working full time under the table, making minimum $20/hr. He deposits the money he makes under the table into his mother's bank account so that it looks like he does not have any income coming in other than unemployment. As far as actively seeking employment, this person opens the phonebook and makes a few calls asking if they are hiring. That's it.

I am just curious if any of this is against the law to be doing. Any answers you can give me would be helpful.

Thank you.

My husband abused my children and me. We got an order of protection. He went to court w/ lawyer and refused to give us any child support. I went to DHS and applied for foodstamps to feed the kids.He took all $$ w/ him, left us w/ $zero. The caseworker said he was collecting UI and claiming us as dependents and using our address!I showed her OP, that he has not lived w/us since Aug. I do not know of his whereabouts, he wont say. During phone visitaion he told kids he's working nights. Bc I'm still married to this loser, am I in trouble too?? I did nothing wrong,I did not cover for him and I was truthful.

Heather - I am sorry to hear about your situation - that sounds terrible. Since you are not the one filing for unemployment, you can't get in trouble for unemployment fraud. If you are still working with your attorney, you should mention this to them - and tell them that you want to do everything you can to make sure you are not associate with what your husband is doing.

Good for you for getting an order of protection, and doing everything you need to do to take care of and protect yourself and your kids.

Best of luck to you getting back on your feet, and getting away from this creep.

Wondering... if folks are collecting unemployment how does it effect their reward when they "turn down" work In their said industry ? Would that be considered fraud? It is a hard pill to swallow when so any in our neighborhood are working 1 and 2 jobs.

Is it illegal for someone to collect unemployment benefits if the person is in jail. My boyfriends mom collected almost 4,000 while he was incarcerated and he doesn't know what he should do about it. Also how does he go about it and could he have that money reinbursted to him.
