California Unemployment

Have you recently lost your job? Did you get laid-off, were you fired, or did you quit? Anyone who applies for California unemployment benefits has to qualify based on a very specific eligibility criteria:

  • You must have earned enough income (wages as an employee) in the base period to qualify you for unemployment.
  • You have to be either completely or partially unemployed.
  • Must have lost your job through no fault of your own.
  • You must be physically capable of working.
  • You have to be willing and available to accept a job.
  • You have to be looking for work; actively searching for a job.
  • Be eligible to collect benefits each week that you file for them.
  • Before you get training benefits, you must be approved for them.

When should you file your claim?

The start date of your UI claim is determined by the date on which you contact EDD for the first time. This date will establish the dates of your base period, which will determine the amount of your weekly benefit. The base period is a period of wages totaling one year, split into four quarters. You should figure out how much you made in each of the quarters that make up your base period to figure out the best time to file your claim. You have to call EDD and fill out a UI application and open claim before you will get an unemployment check or other unemployment benefits - they are not automatic.

Filing Your Claim - What You Need

In order to file your claim, you have to be without a job (this can be for any reason) or be working at a job for less than full-time hours when you make your application. When you apply, you will be asked a series of different questions, some of which will be regarding your last job. You'll also be asked personal questions for ID and demographics and statistics, like birthdate and educational level. Be sure to be as complete and correct in your answers as possible when filling out your application.

When you file your claim, have all of this info ready

  • Your full name.
  • Your social security number (SSN).
  • Your mailing address(and the address of where you live, if these addresses are different).
  • Your phone number (if you only have a mobile number - this will work).
  • Information about your last job and employer (no matter how long you worked there) :
    • Company name
    • Mailing address
    • Physical address
    • Phone number
  • This same info about each of your jobs and employers that you had in the 18 months period before to applying for UI.
  • The date that you last worked.
  • The reason you lost your job.
  • How much money you made the last week that you worked.
  • Driver's license or government issued ID card.
  • Citizenship status and your alien registration number, if applicable.

How To Apply For CA Unemployment Insurance (UI) Benefits?

Base Period

If you file inYour base period is the previous 1 year, which ends on the final day of:
January-February-MarchSeptember
April-May-JuneDecember
July-August-SeptemberMarch
October-November-DecemberJune

Important Terms

  • Effective Date - this is the date on which you file your UI claim with EDD.
  • Benefit Table - this is the table that EDD uses to calculate your weekly benefit amount.
  • Weekly Benefit Amount - this is how much you'll receive every week.
  • Calendar Quarter - three month period.
  • Base Period - One year period of wages that is used to set your Weekly Benefit Amount.

How to Apply by Phone

If you want to apply for unemployment benefits over the phone, call EDD and one of the knowledgeable UI counselors will help guide you through the process. EDD phone lines are under heavy call volume, so you should be prepared to wait for a long time to talk to someone, or you could get busy signals over and over, so you should also be prepared to keep calling.

Weekly Earnings Reporting Requirement

If you actually work in a week in which you apply for UI benefits, you must also report how much you made that week. As far as EDD is concerned, the week starts on Sunday and ends on the very next Saturday. In order to report earnings or wages that you made in the week that you're applying, make sure that you list any money you earned starting on the most recent Sunday up to the day that you file.

Can You Cancel Your Unemployment Claim?

Yes. You are able to cancel your UI claim in the 30 day period following the date that EDD mailed the Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award. You can only cancel a claim within this 30 day period if you have not cashed or deposited an unemployment check or haven't been given notice that you've been disqualified.

Important: Don't give false information or lie on your UI application. You can receive harsh penalties for giving false information or witholding pertinent information on your unemployment application to EDD.

Here's an example that illustrates how this works: you file your claim on Wednesday, so you should report any money that you earned from Sunday up to Wednesday. You must report any and all income that you make during the time that you're filing a certification for and getting unemployment payments and any other UI benefits. In addition, you have to report travel expenses, meals or reimbursement for business meals, or any other money you are paid when working. If you still have questions about your weekly certification, what you should report, or unclear on something, you should call the EDD office and speak to a counselor to get your questions answered.

Important Claim Documents

Once you've completed your application and EDD has processed it, you will be sent the following forms and documents (you should get them in about 10 days):

Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award, DE 429Z.

This letter tells you what your weekly benefit amount is as well as the maximum benfit amount you can receive, which are determined by the wage amounts that your employer(s) report to EDD. You should go over this letter very carefully to make sure it is correct and should call the EDD office if find any inaccuracies. This letter will also explain what you have to do to fulfill your work search requirements.

Notice of Unemployment Insurance Claim Filed, DE 1101CLMT.

This letter includes all of the details and info you gave EDD when you filled out your claim application. Unless you contact EDD within 10 days from the date that EDD mailed this form to give correct information or add details that are missing, then EDD will consider this information to be correct and complete.

Guide to Benefits and Employment Services, DE 1275A.

This guide spells out all of the rights and responsibilities that you have while you are receiving benefits in the Unemployment Insurance Program. Make sure that you read it a all, and understand what is says because you are required to know what's in it, and abide by the rules in it.

Continued Claim Form, DE 4581.

This is the form that you'll use ever week to claim your weekly benefits. The DE 1275A Guide described above includes detailed instructions on how to properly fill out this form. The official benefit week starts on Sunday and then ends Saturday at midnight. You have to answer every question on the form for every week that you certify your claim, then sign it. You have to mail this form to EDD on the date listed on the front of the form. Be sure that you report any money that you made for the weeks listed on the form, and are careful to list the right start and end dates.

How to Complete the Continued Claim DE 4581 Form Video

Before you will actually receive your first unemployment check you will have to wait for one week, which is called the "waiting period" or the "waiting week". In this first week of unemployment, you will be on the program, and have to abide by all of the rules, as well as fill out the weekly claim form to certify - but you will not receive an unemployment check for that first week.

http://www.edd.ca.gov/Unemployment/Eligibility.htm

Disqualifications or Overpayments

In the event that you have had an overpayment or disqualification from a previous UI claim, the overpayment or disqualification might come back to haunt you and be applied to your current claim. If you've ever received a disqualification or overpayment notice you should find it and read it to see how it will affect your new claim.

Pensions & Retirement

Some retirement and pension payments will reduce the amount of your weekly unembployment benefit. If you get any pension or retirement, with the exception of a Railroad Retirement, Social Security, or a retirement or pension that comes from someone else's income or job, you might be required to pay back certain unemployment benefits that you get, if those retirement or pension payments are received at the same time as the unemployment check. EDD may conduct a determination interview in order to figure out if your retirement or pension will affect your unemployment benefits.

Determination Interview

If there is any doubt or questions about whether you are eligible to receive unemployment benefits, EDD will schedule an eligibility determination interview, to be conducted over the phone. EDD will send you a letter notifying you of this called the "Telephone Interview Notification and Instructions", which will tell you the time and date that someone from EDD will call you for your interview. The letter will also tell you the reason for the eligibility interview, what you'll be discussing, as well as give you an idea of the questions you might get asked. The EDD rep will call you at the time listed in the letter, and they'll ask you questions for the purpose of determining whether you are eligible for unemployment benefits. If you were fired from your previous job, or if you quit your job, someone at EDD may also contact someone at your most recent job with some questions as well.

Training Benefits

EDD also offers job training and career development assistance through the California Training Benefits program, which allows UI claimants to get job training at the same time that they're collecting unemployment benefits. There are other training programs that you might qualify for, but you have to contact EDD about them before:
  • you receive 16 weeks of unemployment benefits, or
  • your UI benefits run out and your claim was shorter than 16 weeks

Work Search Requirement

In order to collect unemployment benefits you must actively be searching for a job every week that you file your weekly certification. EDD defines actively searching for a job as filling out applications or sending resumes to companies and employers who have jobs and positions available in your line of work. If you don't look for work during a week that you certify your claim and collect unemployment, your ongoing eligibility to collect unemployment could be affected and you lose your benefits. EDD suggests that anyone collecting unemployment should keep a detailed log of all of your job search attempts, or a work search log, which should include the following information for each job search contact:
  • Company or employer contacted.
  • Contact method - application, resume, interview?
  • Address and phone number of employer contacted
  • Date and time of contact

Job Search Registration

To receive unemployment you have to register for CA's Job Search assistance site called CalJOBS in the first 21 days of your claim. You might also have to fill out a job search survey and go to several different job search assistance interviews or seminars. If you don't register for CalJOBS or if you do not go to the assigned job search interviews or workshops, you risk being disqualified from receiving unemployment benefits.

You can register for CalJOBS and the other work search assistance programs at your local Workforce Services Office.

Automated Phone System

California EDD offers an automated electronic phone service that is accessible 24/7 for unemployment information, general questions, finding a Job Service office or phone number.

Additional Information & Tips

Sometimes EDD has to confirm some of the details that you give them when you apply for unemployment, and if so, you'll get some extra forms in your mail and you'll have to fill them out and give them some extra information.

Filling Out the Application

Follow these instructions if you're applying for unemployment using the paper form, DE 1101I:

  • You're able to complete the form on-line and print it out, or print a blank form out and fill it out with a pen. When you've filled it out and reviewed it for accuracy, you can mail or fax it to the EDD to be processed.

Follow these instructions if you are applying for unemployment online using the eApply4UI system:

  • If you need additional help, refer to EDD's 'Instructions For Internet Form Entry'.
  • When you do the UI Application you might be requested to enter some dates. You can use any of these different ways to format the dates that you give (M = month, D = day of month, Y = year):
    • MM/DD/YYYY
    • MM-DD-YYYY
    • MM.DD.YYYY
  • If you input your dates in any other format you'll get an error.
  • Don't use the Backspace key on your computer's keyboard when inputting your repsonses on the eApply4UI page.
  • No matter whether you are applying online with eApply4UI or applying via mail using the form DE 1101I to file for unemployment, you should know that it will take up to 10 days to process your application.

If you haven't received anything from EDD in a long time, you should call or otherwise follow-up to find out what the delay is.

Nevertheless, do not let more than one, at most two, weeks pass when you are waiting on something but have not received it.

Moving does not in itself disqualify you.

You would however apply for benefits in your new state (if you are moving out of state) - and will have to do an interstate claim.

Make sure all communications like this go to the actual EDD/unemployment office.

This is a private site that is just meant as a resource for people who are unemployed - we can not forward your communications.

I retired 9/1/10 with a weekly pension income of $512.50. Do I still complete my EDD reporting form or does this disqualify me for unemployment benefits?

Thank you.

A pension income doesn't necessarily disqualify you for unemployment benefits.

You unemployment benefit amount, however, will be reduced because of the pension income - and is some cases - it can be reduced to zero.

If that doesn't have what you need, you should contact EDD:

my employer owes me, contractually, a severance paymnet after being let go. They have no offerd to pay over six months. Will this impact my right to receive benefits? If is not enough to live on.

# Site Admin 2011-01-30 08:39
Severance payments don't automatically disqualify you from receiving unemployment benefits but you will not be able to collect unemployment until the severance payments have ended.

It is best to apply for unemployment with EDD, be sure to tell them in detail about the severance payments - and EDD will let you know when exactly you can begin receiving unemployment payments - and how much they will be.

What could disqualify someone from receiving unemployment benefits? What if an employer claims (wrongly) incompetence, disobedience or some other reason? Would a phone interview be scheduled, and, what other factors can disqualify someone from receiving benefits?
Thank you!

Generally, being fired for cause will disqualify you from getting unemployment benefits.

Even if your former employer claims they had good reason to fire you - they need to produce proof and/or supporting documentation.

Also - if you get wrongly denied, you can (and should) appeal the decision.

Prior to June 01, 2010 I was receiving uneployment benefits and then the State had a freeze so EDD stopped sending any benefits. Finally On June 19, 2010 I was employed until the weekending October 29, 2010.I was layed off due to Lack Of Work & enforcement of a Reduction In force. Could you advise me via E-Mail as to wheather I am going to continue receiving benefits from my previous claim or is this claim going to be excepted and qualify me to receive benefits again? I know that it has only been about two (2) weeks since I filed, but I'm running out of provisions. Thank You for all your help and assistance. A.E.

Does the State of California have options for filing for benifits other than mail? Online, By phone, or Direct deposit.
If you are leaving the area for a week or 2 at a time to looking for work and you're single without anyone to forward your mail, how do you keep your benifits going so that you can file out your paperwork and return it so that your bills do not get behind because you did not receive your next weeks check?

Check out EDD Web-Cert:

With this you can do your weekly certification online instead of using the DE 4581 form that you have to mail in.

You should have no problem collecting unemployment while going to school - BUT - you have to be actively looking for a job AND be willing to take a job when offered one.

My claim began on November 14th, my claim form had the week ending the 13th and the week ending the 20th. I was only paid for the week ending the 20th and received a notice saying the week ending the 13th was my waiting period. But, when I filed my claim I was told I wouldn't have a waiting period, since my last claim ended the day before this one opened and all of my previous claim benefits ran out. Should I have been paid for the week ending the 13th?

If a person received unemployment benefits for a year, then got a job but was laid off after two months, would she be eligible for unemployment? The previous year base period would be zero, because of the prior unemployment. Do they go back to a previous year? or is the person out of luck?

End of 2010 we moved from CA becuase it was too expensive to live there, I worked in the state of NV, then was laid off. NV has used an alternative qualifying period and has involved the CA EDD. It has now been over 2 months and NV claims we are waiting on funds requested from CA. I'm out of money entirely, utilities turned off, lost bank accounts and can not survive much longer. Is there a way to contact CA, I've tried but since i do not have a claim through CA I can not get in a phone prompt.

With the economy so bad, after going back to school and not working for a few years I moved to Louisiana for 11 months for a job. I recently moved back to California for a new job, but I'm nervous that they are not going to extend the position to me at the end of my 3 month 'trial' period, or sooner. I've been there one month and am nervous that any day now I may be unemployed again. Will I be eligible for unemployment here in California after only 1 to 3 months? I don't understand the '18 months' referred to in the FAQ's.
Thanks for your assistance!

If I am offered a job out of state, am I required to take it?

And if a job is offered and then rescinded, is that still considered a job offer?

Received unemployment benefits since September 2010. Started school on February 8, 2011. The following week I notified UI of attending school for computer training at Hollywood Worksource Center (EDD Workforce). Was informed that UI will hold my benefits until a determination is made re attending training. Stopped attending training for fear of losing benefits. Had telephone interview on February 24. A determination will be made within 10 business days. What's the worst case scenario? Don't want to lose benefits.

Hello, why is it that your home page seemingly does not have information on the maximum payment that an individual can receive on unemployment? This is the first question on anyone's mind. I have seen numbers that range from $300 a week to $1,700 a month on various websites and in a magazine article or two. Thanks, Ron R

I was out of work for six months because of a back injury, and have now been released by my doctor to go back to work. My previous job in the medical field required training and certification, and paid an excellent salary, but now I can only find part time menial jobs. May I collect EDD benefits because I am working part time and am underemployed?

I was transferred by my company overseas, and then let go. I applied for UI in 2/2011, 6 months after I came back to Ca. I waited for 6 months, and NOW MY BASE PERIOD shows very less income and lots of blank quarters!!! Can I get EDD to adjust my base period? because my maximum benefit was reduced from $22k to $3k and I really need benefits until I find a new job!! Anyone get their Base period adjusted, because they filed really late or for some other reason?

I have a few questions about UI eligibility and am hoping you could help as I have not ever filed before.
1.) I have lived in California for one year and 3 months, but do not have a CA license (only a CT one). Will this affect my eligibility to collect unemployment? I did file 2010 tax return as CA resident...
2.) I was employed for 8 months 7/1/10 - 3/1/11 and submitted my claim 3.15.11. According to the chart on their website it seems that my benefit award will be based on my earnings from July, August and September of 2010, correct?

One more question, pertaining to a friend's eligibility:
3.) If she was paid as a 1099 employee, but paid on an hourly basis, could she receive unemployment benefits if she was fired without any misconduct on her behalf? Or are unemployment benefits limited to only those who were W-2 employees?

Thanks, I really appreciate any insight you can provide.
- Sofia

What is the best case scenario timeframe for which one will receive their first unemployment benefit check? Or, on average how long does it take? I know it says to wait for 10 days to receive mail regarding the claim; is it likely that a check will arrive within 10 days or is there typically follow up information/investigation needed after the initial online application is submitted?

Also, what can be done to 'speed' up the process?

My company is closing the end of Sept. 2011 what will be my base period. The reason I would like to know is because I was out on medical leave from December 28,2010 until March 07,2011. How will this effect my base period? Should I wait until October to file my claim?
Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

# May 2011-05-13 06:39
If you file your claim in Sept 2011, your base period will be Apr 2010-Mar 2011, so you weekly benefits amount will be determined from your highest quarter within that base period. You need to figure out where your highest quarter is at because if you file in Oct, your base period is Jul 2010-Jun 2011. Your medical leave is inevitably calculated in both base periods; therefore, it is up to you to find out which is your highest quarter and to know when to call.

Can I get retroactive unemployment? Over 20 years ago I had a seizure while at work. The agency felt I could no longer do my job because I could no longer drive(license taken away due to seizure). My choice was to either quit, and I could get benefits, or get fired, and get no benefits. In shock, and never thought of legal issues at the time, so quit. Have been self-employed and/or unemployed since then due to ongoing disabilities. Have never filed for unemployment, nor disability. Things are difficult now. Any suggestions?

I have received a "notice of base period change" form from the mail. It is asking me which option (1 or 2) I would like to receive. I have already made a decision and it asks for me to mail to the field office address listed above.

My problem is that there is no field office address printed or stamped on top of the letter. Where would I mail this form? Also there is no enclosed envelope in mail i received.

Thank you

my husband and I separated I now have 4 kids to take care of I have no family out here or anyone that can help me their ages are 10, 5, 2 and 4months. I'm in the process of moving out of state to live with my mom so she can help me. And there is not a company out there that I could transfer to. I recently had my phone interview but the interviewer didn't ask many questions how long does it usually take to find out if you were approved or not.

hi i got laid off last wk ago. i used to make 140k per year been with the same company for 3 years working full time 40hrs per wk. how much will i get from unemployment per week? will the benefits be tax-free or they'll deduct federal and state taxes from the payout? thanks
Reply | Reply with quote | Quote

# May 2011-05-13 06:46
If you make $140k and it's evenly distributed every quarter, then you should theoretically receive $450 weekly. You have the option of deducting money or not for tax purposes when you fill out your claim form. Regardless of what you decide, you'll still have to report this as income on your tax return.

If I am residing in a state outside CA but am working over the internet for a company based in California, where do I apply for benefits if I get laid off? Through the CA EDD (over the internet? on the phone?), or thru my home state's version of EDD? If the employer challenges my claim, is it possible to defend my claim from out of state? Thanks for any info.

If I am currently receiving CA benefits and living in CA, and I decide to move to Maryland? would I still be able to collect unemployment? If so, what would I need to do, and what would be the best day/time to fly in order to not lose any pay.
One more question, does EDD automatically set up a phone interview when someone moves out of state?
Thanks in advance

You can still collect CA EDD if you move to MD. You need to call and inform them of your address change; however, I do not know whether they will set up a phone interview, but most likely they'll tell you when you call them about your address change.

I was involuntarily release by the military due to total years of service. I notice on this web site that pensions may or maybe be deductible from benefits, is a military retirement deductible from benefits, I think technically it is actually a retainer versus a retirement.

A friend of mine recieved a letter from Edd with a phone interview scheduled to discuss subjects regarding eligibility for UI benefits. Those subjects that are being questioned are: Not mailing your claim form within the required time limits. When did you mail your claim form? Why did you send it in after the return date shown on the form? I would like to know why is sending in your claim form late a reason to question eligibility? Is there an acceptable reason and or an unacceptable reason for sending your claim form in after the return date shown on the form? Can benifits be terminated for not mailing your claim form within the required time limits? If so, why? If the reason for mailing it later than the date shown is simply irresponsabilit y and being unorganized by not keeping track of the date, and that resulting from one being ill and certain days unable to be physically active what will be Edd decision for benifit eligibility? What information and actions exactly will Edd require and proceed to determine UI benefit eligibility? How long will it take to determine further UI benefit elegibility? I don't understand how mailing a claim form late should terminate benefits if it already penalizes the person by their payment coming late as a result to their irresponsabilit y. I would really appreciate it if you could please assist me in answering my questions regarding this situation.Thank you kindly.

I went for a job interview only to discover it is a weekend job at a crisis type hot line center with an 18 day work day for Friday and Sat. and possibly getting off at Midnight or early morning hours, which I don't feel is safe to drive the streets in my neighborhood and 18 hours are very long for a days work. Can they make a person work 18 hours and is this legal? This would not even give you a full nights rest.

I was laid off 2 days ago. I have been in school since March 2011 (Mon 2-5:30 and Wed 9:30-1:00). The school considers the vocational program full time. The classes are not in my current field. Will this disqualify me for CA UI benefits? I have searched multiple forumns and have not found a clear answer. I am willing to switch to their self paced online program. I am also willing to quit the program altogether if going to school disqualifies me. What do I need to do to ensure I will receive benefits?

After your temp work, you can resume collecting UI as long as your claim has not expired (one year). If or when a new claim is opened, then it will be based on the last year of work which will now include your 5 week temp assignment.

Also I registered with caljobs but there are no jobs on caljobs for Texas. How does EDD track this? I know they tell you to register with Local Workforce and I did but does this mean at some point i will need to apply for UI out here? One more, I registered with CalJobs long time ago and it has my maiden name will i really need to call to get my name changed for Caljobs purpose(even if that system does not help me in Texas).

Your employer is saying you quit. You will need to get the company's HR dept or your old boss on the phonel, along with the person from EDD who is interviewing you and sort it out. It sounds like your old company does not want to pay for your UI though.

I want to know what happens to people that are collecting from EDD for 2 months and then they find a new job and lets say they get laid off again within that week or in one month. Can they collect again or do they lose their benefits with edd? Or can they reopen the assisting claim? What is the best day to contact EDD by phone? I have been calling the office every day and I get a voice mail to call later and i get disconnected. Can you please let me know what you recommend I do to get a quick responds to questions I may have? Thank you in advance for your help,

If you work for some time and then get laid off, you can apply again for unemployment giving them your recent employer information. Depending on when you opened your original claim, that will determine if you will continue your current claim, or if they will open a new claim. A claim is valid for 1 year from the date opened. This happened to me as well, I opened a claim in August 2010, worked from Nov. 2010-May 2010. When I applied for unemployment in May 2010, they reopened my claim from August because it hadnt been a year yet, and I continued to receive benefits from that claim.

what happens if you are on unemployment and then you get a contracting job and then they laid you off after only working one month or more can you collect again from EDD or do you have to submit a new claim?

Unemployment benefits is only when you are NOT working or are partially working. I dont think having a cut in pay will qualify you for benefits. You can try to apply but i doubt that you will get any benefits.

If I had to resign from my job due to my husbands military duty change station to 29 palms, and in 3 weeks to Okinawa Japan, will I still be able to qualify for unemployment benefits? I applied and I have an interview scheduled with questions as to why I had to leave job? Does this mean I don't qualify because we will be stationed in a whole other country?

I always file my continued claims form via web-cert and generally I receive my payment withing 3 days. I filed the claim form on Sunday, it's now thursday. The only difference on my claim form is that I said I started school. Are they going to stop sending me payments because I'm going to school? The reason I'm going to school is so that I am able to get a good job. Most good jobs require a degree. Oh, and my schooling is all done online so it wouldn't affect my availability or willingness to work. What should I do?

If you put that you started going to school, they automatically stop paying you until they speak with you about your school plans. You should get a letter in the mail with an interview appointment with a date and time in which you have to be available because that is when they will call you on the phone number you gave them when you filed your claim. During the interview they will ask you about your plans and they will determine if you are still eligible for benefits at that time. As far as I know, if you are going to school even if its online, that will disqualify you from benefits. Good Luck!

I mailed my form out on Saturday January 14 2012, it is now Friday the 20th. I haven't received my benefits in my edd card, I also haven't received a letter in the mail regarding this delay! I have payments scheduled for today, now I'm going to be paying the late fees. I understand Monday was a holiday (MLK) is anyone else experiencing this delay?? I'm just getting stressed out!! And the customer service lines don't answer it's an automated message saying they can't answer any calls and it just hangs up.. If anyone knows anything please reply...

Hi, thanks for having this service available! I cannot find answers on the EDD site or other forums. I have been collecting benefits on a claim that runs out in 10/12 (no extensions yet). I have recently taken on some part-time work on a 1099 basis (I work odd hours, from my own office and some hours spent on site with them) with a company that cannot afford to hire me full time. How do I report this income, which is paid once a month? And how does it affect my benefits? I get the full award 0f $450/wk but cannot live on it. Thank you so much for some timely help!

I've been notified that my current job will end on Feb. 10. I will file for unemployment on that day (I'm working less than full-time). Before I learned about the job ending, I planned and paid for a vacation trip to visit family in England (several weeks in June-July). Can I suspend my EDD payments for the weeks I'm gone and resume them when I return? If so, how do I do this? Can it be done without calling the EDD (notoriously difficult to reach)? Thank you!

I claimed unemployment in 2009 and worked through late December 2010 when I had to quit due to transportation issues. I have since then started two businesses of my own as sole proprietorships and both are registered to my name; I haven't made substantial profit from either. I recently began a seasonal job and know I will be getting laid off in April; I currently work around 20 hrs weekly. Would having these businesses registered to me disqualify me for UI? And if I were to qualify, what would my base period be since I had no earnings in 2011?

If I just got layed off because business is slow. And from my calculation, I should wait until April 2012 to file for unemployment, in order to get my highest based earning, whis is from Jan 11' - Dec 11'.

Would it be a problem if I waited a month before I filed?

I am military veteran who involuntarily separated from the service due to reduction in force. I am originally from southern California, and i have been stationed in Virginia for the past several years. I plan on staying here for a few more years to finish my degree, and I was wondering if I can still collect CA unemployment insurance benefits since I'm a CA resident?

Can you continue to collect unemployment if you start school, but are still looking and available for full time employment? I can't find a straight answer anywhere and don't want to sign up for school and then not be able to afford my bills while I'm job hunting.

I am currently receiving CA unemployment from EDD but want to move to Nevada. My occupation is such that I am applying for jobs in different states and it will be a lot cheaper to live in NV instead of CA until I find something. I cannot get through to the EDD phone number to ask this question.

My unemployment award is the max offered weekly, however based on the total award amount in the letter I received, $11,250, my benefits will run out 6 months from now. Do I need to re-apply at that time? Or once that runs out will I have no more benefits? I have been employed and paid in to unemployment for 16 years so why is my award amount so low?And why will it not extend the entire 52 weeks?

# Budlytman 2012-03-13 16:52
After 26 weeks it will be extended. You will receie directions if it is not automatic. And no you didnt pay anything into unemployment ins it was fully paid by your employer.

I have been receiving benefits for 5 mos. and conducting an extensive job search. There is a possibility a job may come through, but the startup date may be a month away. If I get the job, do I continue mailing my forms until I actually begin so I'm not left penniless while I await starting? If so, do I say I'm continuing to look on the extended form? Thanks!

Hello,

I am currently on unemployment extension, and one FT job that I interviewed for is asking if I would be interested in helping them out on a 4 week project on a contract basis. They want to see how well I fit in and it *may* lead to a full-time position.

I am wondering if it is possible to put my unemployment benefit on a temporary hold for the 4 weeks that I am working on this contract, and how I resume it if it doesn't lead to a job immediately afterwards?

Is taking a 4 week contract jeopardizing my unemployment benefit going forward if a FT job doesn't result?

Thanks~

Keep mailing in your claim forms and state how much you made per week. If the job doesnt work out reflect it on your claim forms and your benefits will resume.

Hello, I applied for benefits, and got back my claim form to mail back with a date of Sunday 3/18. Do I drop it in the mail Sunday (which is a no mail day) the day before, or the day after. As the EDD is a tedious service, I don't want to risk any delay or DQ.
Thank you

I am laid off effective 3/30/2012 due to all CA redevelopment agencies dissolution. I am filing for unemployment April 1,2012. How will this be affected if I apply for retirement and receive my monthly pension? Please clarify this because I will be entitled to a very small amount of work pension since I only worked for the agency for 5 years. Can I still receive my unemployment benefits together with my retirement pension? Can I apply for both? For how long? I am also getting a meager amount from my social security.

I am retiring from the military soon and I can not get a straight answer if I will receive unemployment after I leave the military. I have 2 friends who are and were drawing it however EDD reps stated that they should not have due to receiving a pension would offset the unemployment. However EDD reps also state to go ahead and file anyways. So my question is will I recieve unemployment after I retire from the military.

I recently reached the end of my first year, waiting for 2nd Fed Extension. All along, at the top of my forms, were the words "claim expires 3-17-12", which was about 1 year after I filed. Was told that I didn't need to do anything. I received confirmation that my extension was granted and got my continued claim forms--which I returned. When it was time to receive payment, I got a letter saying "You are potentially eligible to file a new claim effective 3-18-12. We need your correct last employer info and last date worked before claim can be filed and any payments issued." WTF? Am I supposed to go online and fill in the whole claim form again? If they could just be clear what they need and how to go about it I would have no problem. Money is now a week overdue and I can't get through on the phone (big surprise). HELP, please!

I am collecting unemployment, just recently, and I was given a job as a substitute. However jobs are hard to get so they are few and far between. My question is that I live in another state and I have worked only 2 half days that equal about 112.00, am I going to be penilized for working as a substitute and will they take my benefits away? Or do I just claim it on the form? I do not want any issues because they are not guarenteed work all the time. Thanks.

I filed for unemployment on 04-27-12, got Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award on 05-03-12. It said the claim starts 04-22-12. The Award amount was $0 because I put down the wrong SSN. I talked to EDD on the phone on 05-07-12. They said they will mail Amended Award letter, which I'm waiting for. I still haven't received Continued Claim Form DE4581CTO, which I need to certify for benefits. Will my 1 week waiting period start on 04/29/12, or 05/07/12 or it hasn't started yet? When will be my first week of receiving benefits?
