How to Reopen an Existing California Unemployment Claim

It may become necessary for you to reopen an existing California unemployment claim if you suspend or cancel your unemployment because you found a job, and then later became unemployed again.

Generally, you can reopen an existing unemployment claim by simply filing a weekly certification online or by phone -- just like you did every week when you receiving unemployment previously.

In some cases, it may be necessary to speak to an unemployment counselor or start the process all over again in order to reopen an existing unemployment claim in California. If this is the case, contact your unemployment counselor to get exact instructions on how to proceed.

I received UI benefits for one month when I found a job. I didn't fill out and send the form back and clearly stopped receiving checks.

My new job is awful and I have decided I would like to go to a vocational college. Am I allowed to reopen my previous claim since it has only been a little over a month since I stopped getting UI benefits? Or would I have to be fired/laid off to receive these benefits?

I have been collecting partial unemployment this past year as I am experiencing a severe reduction in hours at my job. I have been diligent at returning my continued claim forms each time even though many weeks my reported earnings exceed the maximum and therefore I don't receive payment. My last two Continued Claim forms for late Oct and this most recent one have not arrived. What do I do?

I only got 2 weeks of ui. I need to leave the country for 3 months for family situation. Can I reopen my claim when I come back? Also, can I claim from overseas, if I am job hunting in a foreign country?

My unemployment benefits have run out and have been extended. Do I have to start over if I take a job for 6 months or can I reopen the original claim. Do I have to wait a year since my original benefits ran out?

How are benefits calculated on a re-opened claim? I was receiving benefits, then they did not pay claims I sent. I could not get them to respond to me with information. I finally filed a new claim as I was led to believe that was the secret to reopening my claim. They gave me a continued claim, with no waiting period, but my benefits have dropped by 60%!! Can I appeal this? How do I get an appeal hearing set and how do I get them to continue sending me claim forms? I was eligible for extensions on my original claim. I did not get any of them before they cut me off without explanation. I have been working, but could get benefits under original claim benefit amount, but not this lowered amount.

I am currently receiving extended UI benefits. I may have to travel to India due to family reasons.
1. Do I have to close my claim and reopen it ?
2. what do I have to do to close the claim ? I cannot get through the phone at all.
3. what should I do to reopen the claim ? what questions will I have to answer ?
4. can i reopen online ? or do I have to call ?

I would really appreciate a response as I may have to travel next monday.

thanks

I have an existing unemployment claim with my benefit year ending 6/2012. I discontinued benefits because I started working as self employed contractor getting paid 1099. The work is not coming in and currently there are no additional prospects. Please advise on how to reopen my claim? Thank you.

Quoting Rai:

Similar to Rai....when I was out of the country I worked at a job. Because I am only allowed to stay in the country I was visiting for a limited time, I had to quit my job. When I came back into the country I applied for UI. I was denied original benefits because I had been terminated from a job prior to leaving the Country. The judge denied my benefits without prejudice pending an opinion as to whether leaving a job outside of the US still allowed me to qualify for benefits. I appealed the ruling and they told me I did not need to do anything. That was 8 months ago and I have never heard back. Shouldn't I still qualify? Also I went back to work for a short time and have been recently laid off. Do I qualify for the old claim that was filed 10 months ago, or can I wait to qualify under the Alternate Base Period Program?

I would like to know if and how I can re-open a claim that started in May. I was filling out the weekly certification forms for about 3 weeks, then stopped receiving them. I figured that was because I had maybe started working too many hours to receive benefits.
I am no longer working anymore because my hours were majorly cut and the paychecks I was receiving were bouncing. I am now unemployed again.
How can I start receiving unemployment benefits from my original unemployment claim? What can I do?
Thank you so much.

Hi I was receiving unemployment payments until I received a CTB application form. I am not receiving any training. I have tried reaching an EDD representative through mail and by phone, but after almost two months have still not been able to connect with anyone. What should I do to reinstate my claim?

I was receiving unemployment benefits but when I began to do seasonal independent contract work, my claim was closed because I was earning too much money. Now, my contract work has slowed, and I need to re-open my unemployment claim to make ends meet. Can anyone recommend / advise what I need to do to get my pre-existing claim re-opened? Thank you very, very much.

I have been receiving UI benefits since May 2012 and worked as a temporary employee for 2 weeks in Nov/Dec. Since it was only temporary, I no longer am working. My UI payments stopped coming after these reported earnings. Do I need to reopen my claim? If so, how do I do that? Thank you!

I also attended the Reemployment and Eligibility Assessment interview on Dec 17th and was told that I was approved. However I didn't receive anything in the mail afterwards. Just wondering if this is also affecting the hault of my UI benefits payments.
