How to Report California Unemployment Fraud

If you want to know how to report unemployment fraud, you must first be sure that someone is committing unemployment fraud. In the state of California it is a crime to knowingly collect unemployment benefits that you are not eligible to receive, and this is considered unemployment fraud. BUT, it is very important to note that IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO WORK WHILE YOU ARE COLLECTING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS.

You are able to work at a job and make a certain amount of money while still collecting unemployment benefits. When you apply for unemployment, this amount will be determined, and how this works will be explained to you by your unemployment counselor.

If you do work while you are collecting unemployment benefits, it is VERY important that you follow the rules given to you by your unemployment counselor, which includes reporting where you work, how much you make every week, etc.

If you suspect someone of committing unemployment fraud, you can contact the unemployment office to report them. You may be able to remain anonymous, or you may have to give your name and contact information to report them.

When you make your report, be sure to give as much detailed information as possible, including the following:

  • Their name
  • Their address
  • Their phone number
  • Where they are working
  • How much money they're making

If you know that someone is committing unemployment fraud, you can report them by contacting your local unemployment office.

It is my understanding that my ex wife is collecting unemployment because she has told our kids that she turned down a job because she is making more on unemployment. She has been receiving $850.00 per month from me for alimony for that past two months and I assume she is still receiving benefits. Her name is XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX.

it is my understanding that a roommate of mine is receiving FULL unemployment benefits, and is telling unemployment she isnt working at all, when, in fact she is working 2 jobs and both are being paid "under the table" ...... does this sound like grounds worth reporting? im not trying to get into trouble here, but i dont think its right for this to be happening, not only cause its illegal, but i am a hardworking, TAXPAYING individual... unemployment is a great program, for those who really need it, if someone can direct me on where to turn or what to do, that would be greatly appreciated... thank you

I pay my legally seperated wife $2071.00 Spousal Support, $1777.00 Child Support, and $745.00 Military Retirement per month. Grand Total of $4590.00. Now she is claiming unemployment to take me back to court for more money. She is a personal trainer and stopped working at her gym and is spending all her free time trying to build up her personal training side business. How can she get away with this? I know she can get a job in any local gym, but chooses not to in order to build her business and collect unemployment to top it off. Please tell me this is not right, that she can collect unemployment, $4590.00 per month from me and drum up personal training clients also!

I know someone who was getting Unemployment benefits here in California. They then moved to out of state, but before leaving arranged for someone to forward their check to the new state where they now live. They also maintained proof of residence in Cal. by keeping a local Utility bill in their name. As far as I know they have been collecting the benefits for the last 3-4 months. Is this Fraud? why should Californians pay for individuals living in other states. If this is considered Fraud how does one report it?

The person i now work for started an company with another party who put up the money to get it started. Several employees including him were getting unemployment ( until the benefits ran out)He also works from home and lives in another country and interacts with employees via skype. In the buisness were in there must be an active manager on site. I know that they were getting paid under the table because one of the employees told me so. It is not fair for people to take advantage of the edd system and i want to report them. I also have a witness who can back this up. Before i proceed with contacting edd i want to know what they will need as proof other than me being told directly by the person committing fraud. Please help

I work at target with this girl in Santa Maria who currently resides in Lompoc. She's been lying on her claim forms since she got the job there about 8 months ago. I don't know what's taking so long for her to get caught. She's been purposely saying she makes less so she can get more benefits. So imagine getting a $500 paycheck then a additional $300 from unemployment. Must be nice. She's living the dream. She just thinks shell have to just pay it back.

My exwife has reported to family court that she is only receiving unemployment income since Aug.1 2011. I hired a private investigator that went into her "previous" place of employment and posed as a potential client, he met with the owner and was told that she is still working there but now works from home. I want to report her to edd but a lawyer told me that if her unemployment benefits are taken away then family court will just make me pay more child support. This doesn't seem right to let her continue with fraud but I can't afford to pay more child support. Please inform.

My borther has been sucking unemployment for 3 years now. He laughs every time they renew it for another six months and says "Uncle Obama is funding me for another six". He works for a friend at a computer based business and gets paid cash. He has never once looked for a job and when I tell him of an opening hel laughs and says "Why would I want a job?" I would love to report him, but they make it sound like we are the criminals, not the poor unemployed persons.

I use to work for this office and i got laid off and now im receiving unemployment. My co-worker isreceiving unemployment while working with me and she still works there and has been for the past year as she collects . she gets paid about 1,200 bi-weekly not including bonuses and is married with a well paid husband. She gets paid a check that says "cash" on it , so its not directed at her and she always jokes on how shes getting paid double and gets away with it because she acts like shes an independent contractor so she doesn't have to show what she makes when she does her taxes. I don't really think its fair of her making a mockery of the system.

I am amaze how this situation is out of control, I know a lot of people that doesn't want to give the best of them, I am actually a foreign citizen (green card) I full time worker, full time student, and I am actually want to became a citizen of the united states but I want to do it right going into the army and servicing my future nation but when I see situations like this, mine neightbord getting unemployment and working full time, he barely got a huge truck and smokes marijuana infront of the house everyday, one day I asked him how much spends on marijuana he told me around 380 a month because he was sick. he barely got out jail and still in parol, we got in troubles because one day I Was talking to the mail lady and he told us that I was stopping his pay, the lady told him to wait of she will call the cops, then he went back home, I was telling the lady that someone was stilling my mail packages, never happened before after he shows a year ago. I agree on the unemployment program or walfare BUT for people who really need it !!!!! Obama please !!!! take more taxes of my check but instead of be paying 1600 hundred a month for lazy people, you should hire auditors that look around for people like this or do the anti-doping on them. Thank you and glad bless america and the hard american workers !!!

My husband and I have argued repeatedly regarding his unemployment benefits. He attends school and receives both his gi bill and his fasfa while also receiving his unemployment. He also continues to mark no on the box that says are you attending a training or school, which is a complete lie. I do not know if hes allowed to get all this and I do Not feel comfortable with this lie. Please let me know if this is fraud??

hi. my neighbor gets unemployment. I have heard her say several times that she can't work because she is stressed out. she is always so tired that she can't take care of her children. this has nothing to do with not being able to find a job. my friend is living in her house and says also she is not looking and just sleeping all day. her children are all school age and she has every chance to find a job, but doesn't. Her renter told me that she said she has had offers but the pay was only $8/hr so she didn't want to take it. she stays home all day with nothing better to do than harass us. I come home from working hard and see her, getting my tax dollars to harass me. this has to stop. she needs to TRY and get a job, get one, and stay out of our lives.
please check on her.

For the last yr I`ve been living with a man that works full time and is paid under the table so he can continue collecting benefits. He is currently working for a second employer who has agreed to do the same as his last employer until he uses his unemployment benefits up. I find this to be one of the biggest types of fraud our country has to deal with and it needs to be stopped if possible.

I have an ex whom i helped apply for UI benifits. But he just sits around and drinks and does drugs. He puts no effort into actually finding a job. Would this be considered fraud?
